Your observer issue is most likely down to not meeting the minimum system requirements as per:

http://rockstor.com/docs/quickstart.html#minimum-system-requirements

ie:
“All drives must have unique serial numbers (real drives do); not all VM [*] systems default to this”

That page also give info on how this can be enabled within VMware. Which I’m assuming you are using.
