Not much to go on here though, we really need a little context.
But do note that there are many updates already released in either of the update channels once you have selected one. We have already fixed a few “expected string or buffer” potential causes since the 3.9.1 iso release which is now quite old.
Hope that helps and please let us know either way so that we might track this issue down. Ideally a reproducer is what we are after: as in if one does this then “expected string or buffer” results.
