Questions please

I am trying to de-Google my life. So, I want to eliminate Google Drive, Google Calendar, and Google Docs (all of which I currently use). I want to work fully local with Rockstor replacing my Google Drive. My first thought was FileCoud. Though there is no Rockon for it, it seemed like the best option. Then I ran into something in their hardware requirements that was a problem

MongoDB 6.0 requires use of the AVX instruction set, which is available on select Intel and AMD processors.

This is a problem because my processor (an Opteron 6182) doesn’t support AVX instruction set.

So, then I looked at NextCloud. I rejected it because I didn’t want to have to set up docker. I know docker is the big love in the industry right now, but I just don’t want to deal with it. Personally, I prefer to run a cloud server OS as a VM. However, there is a rockon in Rockstor for it, so I am rethinking that position.

I looked at OwnCloud and was impressed. I can set it up how I want. Just set up an OS, in a VM, install OwnCloud on the OS, and up and running. The problem is their support. I joined their community and, lets just say, they are unresponsive. I posted an introduction with a few questions and it’s been 5 days. The post hasn’t even been approved to be on their support board, let alone made available for anyone to answer my questions. That is a major red flag for me. I love the community here. I get an answer within 24 hours. Even if it’s doesn’t solve my problem immediately, I can work though the problem within a reasonable time frame on these boards and I expect that from other open source communities as well. Owncloud claims their open source, but…

I looked at Seafile, which also has a Rockon. Big plus. Also great reviews online. The community seems active and helpful as well. However, while no official announcement has been made, there are whole posts dedicated to Seafile having issues developing their android app and there is discussion on whether Seafile will discontinue the app or not.I would need that app and, with it being in limbo on Seafile, I have to call them out.

Finally, dropbox… NO… Just no. Not paying for them. Can’t host local server. etc.

So, this leaves me with a question…

What would the community recommend? What all are you using and how are your experiences?

Based on my needs, I am leaning back towards Nextcloud, but I am unsure. Honestly, the biggest thing to lead me to OwnCloud is the vast number of YouTube videos, from people I respect, on how to set it up and configure it. I am finding far less on YouTube about Nextcloud and, of course, nothing on YouTube about setting up Nextcloud on Rocktor (all the videos are about TueNas and I don’t get why. I prefer Rockstor a milliions times over TrueNas). So, that said, I wanna know what you all use and, lets just say you all suggest Nextcloud, will need some hand holding on setting it up and getting it doing what I need.

On the Seafile topic, the current Rockon will need to be revamped due to major breaking version changes (when they moved from 11 to 12). In the current Rockon framework that’s a non-trivial task at the moment. So, if you do entertain the Seafile (if the Android question becomes more clearly resolved) then there’s a little bit of work to do.

Good to know… looks like I should take Seafile of my short list. The more I am hearing, the less it seems like a viable option

Well my use case is basic, but I have been using Tailscale for VPNing into my NAS. Usually at work or my brothers house.

Its not for any heavy use. Just loading up a show on my phone. But so far that and conjunction with my NFS/Smb shares and Kodi it works pretty darn well.

So, I took a gamble. I first setup Nextcloud as a seperate server. It worked well, but…

Nextcloud doesn’t play nice with network storage.

So, after having played with it in a Proxmox VM, I went and setup the Nextcloud Rockon. It worked well, but…

I setup port forwarding in my pfsense box and tried to access Nextcloud from outside my network. It failed. Got errors about untrusted domains and was denied access. Worse, the Nextcloud community wasn’t any help. The only solution they came up with was to SSH into the Nextcloud serve. I tried to explains I was running it as a Rock-On so when I SSH, I get my Rockstor server, not the Nextcloud docker container. So, they told me there wasn’t a solution.

I finally figured it out on my own. Nextcloud has an occWeb app. Looking it over, it looked very similar to a console, so I gave it a shot. It isn’t an SSH Console and doesn’t use the same commands. I almost gave up. However, I did a search to see if Nextcloud had any support docs on occ and lucked out. Back in Ubuntu 18 days, someone had posted a threat on the Nextcloud community on how to update trusted domains in occ. I had to cross reference old commands to new ones, but I got it the trusted domains updated and can access it from outside my network. So, step one of de-Googling my life is looking good. My cell is backing up photos as we speak

Excellent progress then!!! If you kept notes, maybe it’s worthwhile to post some of that info on the forum, if you can, for the next one to try this out, especially since it sounds like this was unfortunately not quite as straightforward to get it all set up (once the Rockon was running).

Honestly, I have to say that I probably would have gotten it done faster if I had asked here. I have little doubt someone else here has been through what I have and y’all seem more on the ball with answering questions and providing help. Could be worse, though… I initially thought of using OwnCloud. I posted a question on their support forum and it took a week for a mod to approve the post. It’s now been a whole week more (so 2 total weeks) and NO ONE has answered the post. You would figure the mod who took the time to read the post and decided to approve it might have at least offered some input, but even he couldn’t be bothered. That was the down fall of OwnCloud with me. I have to say that, for support, they are the worst I have even seen.
