Hey folks,
I’ve been lurking for a while and testing Rockstor in a VM for quite a bit. I am considering moving from TrueNAS Scale with a replication server to Rockstor for my home storage environment. Before I do so, just wanted to see if the project was going to have a stable release soon and if I should roll out with 15.6 or tumbleweed? The project looks good so far BTW and thanks!
@mtgranito Welcome to the Rockstor community forum.
Re:
Yes, our current downloadable installers have pre-installed 5.0.15-0 which is at Stable Release Candidate 10:
15.6, as per the recommendation on the Downloads page. Tumbleweed is hard to track as it changes so often and we offer it for more advanced users and to see where we are heading as it were. I.e. folks can, via the Tumbleweed based installer, assess what we need to accommodate and how we are doing for future versions as it were.
Also note that subscribing to Stable, on an openSUSE Leap 15.6 based installer, even thought we are pre 5.1.. Stable release, is find. It just means your system will be held at it’s current ‘rockstor’ rpm version until we do publish our next Stable rpm. We got folks onto late testing (Release Candidate) in our more recent installers given this last testing phase has been a rather long one. This way we ensured new installs where based on near modern Stable (RC), rather than older Stable, as they were. Plus we had a lot of work to do re updating and testing the installers also. But the vast majority of this work has now been finished.
Hope that helps.
That does indeed! Is there a published roadmap anywhere that is public? I’d be curious to see is next for project. Again, thank you!
@mtgranito Re:
We use mainly GitHub Milestones, and have recently added a new one as the focus of our next testing phase:
Other than that we try to respond to queries, request, & bug reports; and have these guide priorities if possible within the current Milestone. Resources, as almost always in Open Source, are limited: so we have to take little steps. But sometimes the needed steps are just big: that was the case with this closing testing phase - hence the delay since releasing our last Stable rpm. Plus, as we are a community project, what gets done is what folks tend to contribute. While the maintainers balance this with more over-arching needs re updates etc. Essentially we are modernising our code base and reducing our dependencies before branching out to more interesting facilities. But all in good time.
Hope that helps, at least regarding our near term goals.
Hi @mtgranito
I have Rockstor running on dedicated hardware for home usage for 1,5 years now and I am more than happy with it.
About 4 months ago I made a fresh installation with the latest installer (Rockstor 5.x built on Leap 15.6), immediately updated to the latest version in the development branch and then activated the stable licence.
I am running rockstor without any issues and can definitely recommend it for home use
Best regards
Simon
