Could Someone Give me Advice with Configuring Rockstor for Remote Access?

Hello there,

I am reaching out for some guidance on configuring Rockstor for remote access. I have been using Rockstor for my home NAS setup; and it is been fantastic so far. Although; I am looking to access my Rockstor system remotely and could use some help with the configuration process.

I want to be able to access the Rockstor web interface and shared folders from outside my local network. I have done some research and come across various methods like setting up a VPN; using port forwarding; and dynamic DNS services. Although; I am unsure which method would be best suited for my situation and how to implement it properly.

Can someone provide a step by step guide for setting up a VPN with Rockstor? What VPN solutions are compatible with Rockstor?

If I decide to go with port forwarding; what are the necessary ports to open, and what security measures should I take to ensure it is safe?

Also, I have gone through this post; https://forum.rockstor.com/t/how-to-start-rockstor-after-installation-aws-devops/ which definitely helped me out a lot.

How do I set up a dynamic DNS service with Rockstor? Is there a preferred service that integrates well with Rockstor?

Thank you in advance for your help and assistance. :innocent:

@roberrttt welcome to the Rockstor community.

If you’re taking a look at the list of Rockons we currently have available, two of them come to mind.

  • For dynamic DNS you could use DuckDNS, if your router doesn’t have a dynamic DNS option already (or you don’t want to use that).
  • For remote access you can either set up TailScale (see the documentation here: Tailscale install — Rockstor documentation)
  • Alternatively, you can use the WireGuard Easy Rockon

For either VPN approach here you will need to perform some port forwarding from your router. For example, for the WireGuard Rockon, if you stick with a default port 51820, that’s the one you will have to forward from your router to the Rockstor IP (UDP only is required if your router differentiates).
