This error is due to no serial on the system disk. Please see the most recent forum thread on this issue and how you might add a serial via your virtual machine manager (presumably VMWare):

We have a pending rockstor-doc pull request:

add drive serial requirements to min sys spec. Fixes #157

to add this to our Minimum system requirements

Hope that helps. Essentially an artefact of VMWare failing to give drives a unique identifier by default such as is the case with real drives.
