Recommendations for Setting Up a Cloud Server with M.2 SSDs?

Hi everyone,

I’m considering setting up a cloud server using Rockstor and I’m curious about the best practices and recommendations. Specifically, I’m looking to integrate M.2 SSDs for enhanced performance and reliability.

Has anyone here implemented a similar setup? What are the key factors to consider, and are there any particular configurations or hardware recommendations you’d suggest? Any insights or experiences would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

Well, just a couple thoughts on the matter here… having destroyed SSD’s in a couple months myself…

If you use the M.2’s as long term storage and don’t change the data frequently, then they should last several years at least. However, you will find if the data stored changes often, the write/balancing wear will take its toll.

Sooo, here are my recommendations:

Do not fill the M.2 drive over 50% if large frequent data changes are made. This will prolong the use. For instance, if you wish to store 1TB of data, use a 2TB drive.

If data changes are minimal and small in general, do not fill the M.2 over 75%. Same reasoning applies. You wish to prolong the life by limiting write/balance cycles.

Have a backup plan and use it. Doesn’t matter if it’s a USB HD or internal HD/SSD.

Before any flash type memory dies from over writing use, it will start to slow down dramatically. Files that used to store at say 2000 mbps will slow to 200 mbps etc.

Also, filling up an SSD from the start will dramatically slow its write performance immediately due to balancing bottle-necks.

So, using SSDs of any type for long term storage requires some thought. It really doesn’t matter much the storage method, SLC, MLC, TLC, or QLC… they will all fail eventually when they hit the cell write limit.

Just my thoughts…

Good Luck and always have fun!
