This is working in latest testing.

Rockon-Root is showing
Searching through the documentation relating to Rockons, this page was could do with further information on how to Restore Your configuration
@Mike-B Glad to hear of the progress, well done.
Re:
Don’t bother deleting it, just in case it was accidentally used before by a Rock-on for something data related. Just ignore it and Setup Rock-ons using a new clean “rock-ons-root2” for example. That way you avoid any issues that can happen with re-suing a rock-ons-root from a prior install.
Not a Pool, but a share: there may be a typo. Each Rock-on has to install itself: but we push folks to use a dedicated share for say it’s config, and it’s data. But the Rock-ons program part also need somewhere to live. We call this a Rock-ons root: and it can safely be shared between Rock-ons: unlike config or data shares.
The following doc entry explains:
https://rockstor.com/docs/interface/overview.html
Follow that but create a new “rock-ons-root2” share for example: or what-ever makes sense name wise for you.
This way you can begin installing the Rock-ons you had before: and be sure to select the same shares as you did before for each Rock-on. I see some share names that likely relate to prior Rock-ons. That way the new Rock-ons will pick-up exactly where the old ones left off: i.e. they will have the same configuration and data set as before given the nature of docker/Rock-ons seperating our the program part form the config and data parts.
But yes, starting out with a new dedicated “rock-ons-root2” share means you also get to have a cleaner setup and potendially avoid some issues we have seen with using old rock-ons-root shares after re-installs.
Agreed: but it relates mainly to config restore, which you do not have. You only had access to the raw data that you had before. Where-as a config save file: once restored, can auto-install all the rock-ons you had before: thanks to a major effort by @Flox a couple of years ago.
So in short follow that page to get your Rock-ons capability off the ground: but create a new “rock-ons-root2”. Just to be safe. Then set about installing the individual Rock-ons as you need them: resourcing the existing shares from your old (now imported) Pool if they exist.
Hope that helps. And do keep in mind, and take a note of, the documentation that is falling short - as you have done already. We can then create targeted issues to improve them as resources are available: folks mainly .
Once again Thanks @phillxnet, your patience and knowledge really has empowered a journey through the Linux/Rockstor complexities providing clearer understanding.
Rockons will be set up forthwith with feedback.
Finally all is up and running.
A few tweaks required in both Jellyfin and Netdata as some videos are not recognised and Netdata is a newer version and needs a peruse to discover the parameters I would like. From what I’ve observed the Xeon cpu hasn’t even flinched to stream an ultra hd film and temperatures rose a couple of degrees.
The cpu fan needs replacing as the noise level, whilst not especially heavy, isn’t low enough for a lounge, a Noctua NH-L9i, Premium Low-Profile cooler has been ordered?
Back to the Documentation
I understand that the context of the text in the RockOn Restore section could imply that a config restore is available, this isn’t obvious when the user has jumped into the section from a link, a note relating to actions, with or without a config restore would be beneficial to users just starting out with little or no previous understanding of such system’s.
Thanks again
Three cheers for a success!
PS: I use Rockstor ONLY as a NAS, nothing else at the moment. The ONLY Rockon I would like to
someday install would be a BOINC client…
Thanks @Tex1954
Wow, there’s a rave from the grave, “The search for extra terrestrial life” comes to mind and some work I helped out with Cambridge University eons ago.
Thats a really good idea @Tex1954, as current Rockstor sits doing very little most of the time and could provide support for such ventures.
Unfortunately current understanding of codeing for a RockOn (Just had a look and there doesn’t appear to be a ready made one) is “where is the switch”
Initially an excellent innovation, now wondering what the downsides could be ???
I believe, a docker container exists for the BOINC client, so one could look into creating a Rockon for that:
https://hub.docker.com/r/boinc/client
or the linuxserver.io version of it:
https://hub.docker.com/r/linuxserver/boinc
The challenge with the official container might be that it hasn’t been updated in over three years (while the connect BOINC application is still under development), which also likely means that it might be lacking some security updates for the ubuntu base images its using. Since linuxserver.io takes a slightly different approach, that might be the simpler, more up to date version …
Cool beans! I started with Distributed.NET maybe 18 years ago? Then discovered World Community Grid, BOINC, and Folding@Home things. I still run that most of those today.
I was actually #1 in the WORLD for 1 Day on one new BOINC CPU project when I was running 18 setups… LOL! Then the high powered university clans clobbered me.
In any case, I am a machine control assembly language & hardware guy and have real trouble with any language much harder that BASIC.
Sigh… old now and still recovering… still a computer Geek…
Thanks to the folks here that know what they are doing though for sure! Beyond basic hardware and low level stuff, “I know nuthin!” . Hahahaha!
I can’t wait for the next stable release… then I will update my 4.1 NAS to 5.xxx whatever.
@Tex1954 Re:
Yes, me also: but we are getting there:
Only 6 issues remaining: and 2 of those should share a single fix .
Re:
We have a Rock-on for that:
WOWEEE WOW WOW! FAH is running on my Backup NAS!!!
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
